Title: The Lady’s Chamber, Tower of London Alternate Title: The Queen of Ten Days - Lady Jane Grey In The Tower Artist: P.H. Calderon Source: "The Illustrated London News" Date: April 25, 1863. Text With Image: "The lady prisoner in the suggestive little picture we have engraved is intended evidently to be Lady Jane Grey. It is, we think, surprising that incidents from Lady Jane’s career – whose life and death is one of the most romantic and touching in our history – are not more commonly chosen as themes by our painters..." Medium: Info From Owner: The paint is very old and has been laid upon a chalky material which has been slurried and embedded upon a mesh like material. School: Owner thinks it might be from the "Titian" School or Possibly a Flemish painting of the period. Notes: This scene is fantasy as it never took place, as most historians believe Mary I never met with Jane after her imprisonment, but who knows it may have happened, but doubtful. It is very similar to an illustration by George Cruikshank entitled "Jane Imploring Mary To Spare Her Husband's Life." that appears in William Harrison Ainsworth's book "The Tower of London". Clayton Year: 1861 Notes: The scene looks like a woman about to be taken to her execution and the book only covers 3 women who were executed: Lady Jane Grey, Anne Boleyn and Anne Askew. It doesn't strike me as either of the Anne's but there is no clear label so I'm only saying it's possibly Jane.
