Artist: The "Shilling" or Medal of Lady Jane Grey was made by E. Emery, the famous forger of English coins. Image Location: Print Collection, Miriam and Ira D. Translation of the coin: Front: IOAN D[EI] G[RATIA] ANG[LIAE] FR[ANCIAE] ET HIB[ERNIAE] REGINA MDLIII (Jane, By the Grace of God of England, France, and Ireland Queen 1553.) Back: IN TERRIS ANG[LIA] ET HIB[ERNIA] ECCLES[IAE] CAPUT SUPREM[UM] (On Earth in England and Ireland Supreme Head of the Church.) Info: Pretended to be struck in anticipation of her elevation to the throne. In it's style it is meant to imitate the coins of the time of Henry VIII. Very fine and a seemingly unpublished example of Emery's work E80-120. Provenance: Bt Spink c. 1960. Struck in the hammered style of the Queen Mary coinage Pagan lists a jeton and a medal of Lady Jane Grey (nos. 87, 88), both with a three-quarter left facing bust. Translation of the coin: Front: JOANNA REGINA D[E]I GRATIA ANGLIA FR[ANCIA] (Jane, Queen by the Grace of God of England and France).
