Lady Jane Grey In The Tower

“I am assured that I shall, for losing of a mortal life,
find an immortal felicity.” –
Jane in the letter written on the blank pages of her Greek Testament to her sister Katherine - February 10th 1554

She opens her bible.

Gilt pages reddened by the sun
match hair still long, left unshorn
until morning when the light

rises again and shines
on bells pealing, doves shaking loose
the fury of prayer.

Tonight, the stone walls
do not enslave. Space is open
to her thoughts as she chooses
first to call upon her sister,
then God’s Son.

She whispers; you were the beautiful one,
flesh white as a dawn-lit sky,
and no stars, no stars
clustering its brow
with this bitter fate.
But I am glad, you are left
for the poets to sing of,
while I am kept for the henchman
to slice freckled skin.

Please do not grieve me.
Outside my window,
I see roses draping the wall.
He has sent his robe
to clothe my fear,
to wrap a woman’s ghost
in velvet fire.
