Sweet Lady Jane

Sweet Lady Jane,
Aglow in your silvery lace,
You blew me a kiss
While childhood still bloomed in your face.

Condemned by your kin
To sit on a cold English throne,
Their plots and intrigues
Made you reap what others had sown.

Barely sixteen,
Too young for your too-final fate;
Nine days as Queen,
But only a woman too late.

Swift falls the axe,
It cleaves the blue heavens' great dome;
God's outstreched arms
Will guide you, my sweet angel, home.

You reign still as Queen
Of the heart of this lonely old groom
Whose tears fall like rain
On roses that twine round your tomb.

Aged by the years,
My cheeks have grown hollow and grey,
Yet still blush with love
From the kiss that you blew me that day.
