Shows: Two bushes on the grounds of Sudeley Castle meant to represent Lady Jane Grey following Katherine Parr Info: Sudeley Castle is known for being the final resting place of Katherine Parr, Henry VIII’s sixth wife. She died here in 1548, less than a week after giving birth to a daughter by her fourth husband Thomas Seymour, Baron Seymour of Sudeley. She came to Sudeley for her confinement and brought with her Lady Jane Grey. Katherine’s route to the chapel of St Mary’s is marked today with rose arches and two bushes shaped into the form of ladies. One represents Jane Grey; the other Katherine. In order to get to the chapel on the castle grounds, Katherine would come out of the door below the nursery and walk towards ‘the white garden’. Today there is a stained glass window that looks into the church from the garden, however then there would have been a clearing which allowed Katherine and Jane to sit in the garden and listen to the sermon at the same time. The figure in the front reading the book is Katherine and Jane follows. Images by: Nasim Year: 2008 Found here, here, and here. Permission granted to use by photographer. |
